For many couples, choosing the song is the first decision in planning a first dance. There is no single right answer: the best song is one you both enjoy listening to and your bodies can follow without effort. These criteria can help you decide.
Start with meaning
Each of you, make a short list of songs that remind you of moments together: a trip, a first date, a track that played at home. Compare the lists. Often one song appears on both.
Listen with dancing in mind
A song can be lovely to hear and hard to dance to. When testing a candidate, pay attention to:
- Tempo: very fast songs call for quick steps; slower ones leave time to breathe and lead calmly.
- A clear pulse: it is easier to follow a song where the beat is easy to feel.
- Length: a full song can feel long for beginners. Many couples use an edited version or just a section.
Think about the moment and the space
A first dance happens in front of people you care about, usually with limited space and plenty of emotion. A song you can dance simply, with a few well-executed steps, often looks more natural than an ambitious routine.
Test before you decide
Dance to the song in your living room for a few minutes. If you still want to play it again, that is a good sign. If tiredness or distraction set in quickly, it may be worth trying another option or another version of the same song.
Keep a backup
Having an alternative ready takes the pressure off. If you later find the first choice is not working as well, changing songs is still possible, and the posture and leading you have already practised remain useful.
